In light of the ongoing discussion surrounding the “Al Qalam: Poets in the Park” monument recently unveiled in New York City, American Friends of Green Lebanon Club emphasizes the importance of preserving the historical and cultural accuracy related to the legacy of the Lebanese Mahjar writers who played a major role in bringing Lebanon’s literary and intellectual voice to the world.

Literary figures such as Kahlil Gibran, Mikhail Naimy, Ameen Rihani, and Elia Abu Madi remain an essential part of Lebanese cultural memory and of the history of the Lebanese diaspora in the United States, particularly in New York, where the Mahjar literary movement flourished.

While affirming our respect for cultural openness and the diversity that characterized the immigrant experience, we also believe that any tribute dedicated to these intellectual pioneers should accurately reflect their historical roots and cultural identity in a way that preserves their legacy for future generations.

Preserving historical truth does not contradict openness; rather, it is an essential part of respecting the memory and cultural history of peoples.
